John T. Myers Locks and Dam are located at mile 845.9 of the Ohio River. The locks were opened in 1969 and the dam was completed in 1975. The project replaced Lock and Dams 47, 48 and 49 on the Ohio River. The main lock chamber is 110’ x 1200’ and the auxiliary chamber is 110’ x 600’. The project is located about 3 ½ miles downstream of Uniontown Kentucky and was originally named Uniontown Locks and Dam. The project was renamed in honor of Indiana Congressman John T. Myers in 1996. At John T. Myers Locks and Dam, major repairs of the main chamber associated with heavy use and age force greater future reliance on the inadequately-sized auxiliary chamber. This results in accelerating transit costs. The John T. Myers and Greenup Locks Improvements Interim Feasibility Report, a product of the Ohio River Mainstem Study, recommends a 600’ extension of the auxiliary chamber and a miter gate quick changeout system. This project was authorized for construction in the Water Resources Development Act of 2000.
According to the Corps of Engineers Waterborne Commerce Statistics for 2008, over 71.9 million tons of commodities were shipped through John T. Myers Locks. These shipments had a combined value of $13.4 billion. The leading commodity shipped was coal, which comprised 51% of the total tonnage. Grains, iron/steel, grains, ores/minerals, petroleum and chemicals were next, totaling almost 43% of the tonnage. These products represented the largest total commodity value of $8.2 billion. The state that shipped the most tonnage through John T. Myers Locks was Illinois, transporting 22.5 million tons. Of this amount, coal made up over 21.3 million tons. The value of Louisiana’s commodities was higher than the shipments for any other state, as its high-value products such as ores/minerals, iron/steel and chemicals, were worth more than $5.3 billion. Indiana received over 17.5 million tons through John T. Myers Locks, with a combined value of almost $1.1 billion. Coal made up approximately 14.9 million tons of this amount. Louisiana was second in receipts of Myers Lock traffic, receiving 14.7 million tons of goods. Ohio’s docks received 12.7 million tons of commodities valued at almost $3.3 billion. Illinois’ 19th Congressional District was the leading shipper of commodities through John T. Myers Locks. This district shipped over 15 million tons, mainly coal, with a combined value of over $575 million. Louisiana District 3 was next, with over 12.5 million tons of high-value commodities such as iron/steel, chemicals, petroleum and ore/minerals that were worth a combined $2.4 billion. The leading Congressional District in receipts of John T. Myers Locks commodities was Indiana District 9, which received over 15.2 million tons.
